For a mother raising three children, a driver’s license became more than a way to get around. It gave Jeanine the freedom to reach work, keep appointments, and make choices for her future.

When Jeanine arrived in Maine in late 2023, even getting to an appointment could feel like an impossible task. Public transportation did not take her where she needed to go, and asking others for rides could leave her feeling vulnerable. She says that some people who offered transportation pressured her to become their girlfriend or partner in return.
The strain built up. Jeanine recalls staying inside her home, crying, and wondering how she could keep going. At times, she thought about returning to the country she had fled.
Then she heard about Good Helper Foundation’s Driving to Independence program from her sister, a former participant and program graduate.
“I told myself, ‘I’m going to take this training.’ It wasn’t easy. I had to work hard and keep trying. I failed my road test the first time, but I tried again—and the second time, I passed.”
That second test opened a new chapter. Today, Jeanine can travel to work in Portland, Bath, and other communities, and take jobs farther from home.
“Now I feel free. I can wake up, get ready, and go. Having my license and being able to drive is one of the best things that has happened to me since I arrived in Maine.”
Jeanine is sharing her story so other women can find the same opportunity—and so the people who make the program possible understand what their support means.
“This program has helped us so much. Please continue supporting it. You are doing something very good for many women like me.”
Your support can help another mother move from isolation toward opportunity. Contributions help Good Helper Foundation provide driving instruction and cover essential program costs, including fuel, insurance, and vehicle maintenance.
