This week, on the afternoon of June 4, 2024, the Good Helper Foundaiton partnered with Youth for Human Rights International in Lewiston for an important presentation about human rights. We delivered this presentation to the sixth grade class of Montello Elementary School here in Lewiston, Maine, with an enthusiastic response.

During our presentation, we talked to a crowd of around 60 sixth grade students, along with teachers, and distributed around 60 booklets and 30 posters explaining human rights, which were provided by Youth for Human Rights International.

Let’s pause for amoment to talk about what we mean when we talk about human rights, why it’s an important conversation in for today’s youth, and finally, we’ll share how the presentation at Montello Elementary School went.

Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every single person in the world, from the moment we’re born to the day we die. These rights are universal, meaning they apply regardless of where you’re from, what you believe, your race, gender, or any other factor.

Here are some core examples of human rights:

  • The right to life, liberty, and security of person: This is the foundation of all other rights.
  • Freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment: No one should be subjected to physical or mental harm.
  • Freedom of expression: You have the right to freely express your opinions and beliefs.
  • The right to education: Education is crucial for personal development and participation in society.
  • The right to work and fair treatment at work: Everyone deserves the opportunity to earn a living with dignity.

We’re sure everyone will agree on these rights — after all, it’s nothing radical or new.

But let’s talk about why it’s important to continue to talk about human rights in today’s modern world.

When we stop talking about human rights, we normalize their violation. Here are a few reasons why we can’t afford to stay quiet:

  • Constant vigilance is key. Human rights aren’t guaranteed. Powerful forces can erode them through war, political agendas, and neglect. Keeping them at the forefront reminds governments and institutions of their obligations.
  • Progress isn’t linear. We’ve come a long way, but new challenges emerge. From technological surveillance to climate change’s impact on basic needs, the human rights framework needs to adapt and expand to address these issues.
  • Awareness empowers. Many people don’t fully understand their rights or how to claim them. Open discussions educate individuals and communities, allowing them to stand up for themselves and others.
  • Solidarity is our strength. Talking about human rights transcends borders. By sharing stories and experiences, we build global solidarity, pressuring violators and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

The Results of Our Human Rights Presentation

We would like to take a moment to express our gratitude to the principal, teachers, and other staff at Montello Elementary School who warmly welcomed us and made space for this important presentation.

We’re happy to report that we were able to have a fruitful and lively conversation with the youth in Montello Elementary School.

It is our fervent hope that this discussion will stick with them as they grow into adulthood and shape the decision they make and the way treat others for the better.
